Se déroulant 183 ans avant les événements de la trilogie de films originale, Le Seigneur des Anneaux : La Guerre des Rohirrim raconte le destin de la maison de Helm Mainmarteau, le roi légendaire du Rohan. Après une attaque-surprise menée par Wulf, un impitoyable et rusé seigneur Dunlending souhaitant venger la mort de son père, Helm et son peuple doivent se défendre dans une ultime bataille en se réfugiant dans lancienne forteresse de Fort-le-Cor, connue plus tard sous le nom de gouffre de Helm. Se trouvant dans une situation de plus en plus désespérée, Héra, fille de Helm, devra faire preuve de courage pour mener la résistance face à un ennemi redoutable déterminé à les anéantir.
